Annual Fall Gardening Symposium

Dodge County Master Gardener Association will host four dynamic speakers in a day-long event at the Horicon Marsh Educational Center on Saturday, November 2, 2024.  Registration is required by October 11th and seating is limited.

At this year’s Gardening for Gold Fall Symposium, local and regional speakers will share their expertise with gardeners of all levels of experience and skill.  David Drake, a Professor and Extension Wildlife Specialist in the Department of Forest and Wildlife Ecology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison will highlight the benefits and provide tips for building habitat to support wildlife, especially in human-dominated areas. He will also go over the success of Certified habitats including the National Wildlife Federation's Certified Wildlife Habitat Program.

Janell Wehr, Extension Horticulture educator serving Marathon and Wood Counties, will share information about beneficial and invasive insects. Learn how beneficial insects can assist in the garden, explore the crucial role of pollinators, uncover the delicate balance in your backyard ecosystem, and discover the steps you can take to support a thriving landscape full of diverse insects.

Hear about nocturnal pollinators from Matt Rupnik, Director at Marsh Haven Nature Center in Waupun. He will cover some of the species of vertebrates and invertebrates that are nighttime pollinators, the types of flowers and their characteristics they are attracted to, and the threats they face.

Landscaping for low maintenance will be presented by Tim Ripp, Horticultural Educator and Outreach Specialist in Sauk County. Discover how your garden spaces can be a haven for pollinators and other wildlife, low maintenance, while being tidy and beautiful all at the same time!

A lunch will be included in the events of the day as well as a Silent Auction featuring many items of interest to gardeners and non-gardeners alike.
